In May 2012: Beste Haskan attended the Post-Graduate Conference on English Literature and Translation Studies at Çankaya University with a paper entitled To Inspire Or To Be Inspired: The Question Of Inspiration In Shelley's "To A Sky-Lark" and "Ode To The West Wind".

In April 2012, Gender and Sexuality: Second Undergraduate Conference on Anglo-American Literature

English Language & Literature and American Culture & Literature, two sister departments of the Faculty of Humanities and Letters, organized the second undergraduate conference, which lasted for two days in April. The venue was at the C Block Auditorium, a meeting place for those interested in literature, arts, social sciences and cultural studies. The conference began with the opening speech of Dean Prof Dr. Talât Halman at 10 a.m. on the first day and continued with the continual interest of the participants. Students from Istanbul, Ege, Pamukkale, Istanbul Sehir, Gaziantep, Fatih, Erzurum Atatürk Universities inspired the listeners with their brilliant papers.

Young scholars presented papers, held discussions and exchanged ideas on "Gender and Sexuality," which was nominated as one of the most interesting topics according to the registration documents filled in by the attendants, last year.

Next year's topic is "Madness" as decided by the attendants of this year's conference. We hope to meet in April 2013, in the third annual Anglo- American Undergraduate Conference.

March 2012: ELIT student production of Blood Wedding by Federico Garcia Lorca: Directed by Erdi Mamikoglu (graduate of Bilkent's Department of Performing Arts, current Director at the Ankara State Theatre, and recent recipient of the Sadri Alisik Anadolu Tiyatro Award).

Set in early 20th century Spain, Mamikoglu's surrealistic approach to the revenge, passion, grief and despair caused by a family feud was presented on three nights with enthusiastic efforts by ELIT students as actors and actresses as well as backstage and technical staff. The Bilkent Theatre hall was full of theatre-lovers who participated in the unforgettable experience and excitement.

Two previous performances by the ELIT department in 2009 and 2010 were directed by Dr. Gül Kkurtulus, who was Project Manager for Blood Wedding. (See below for The Importance of Being Earnest and Arms and the Man.) Translation for this performance of Blood Wedding was done by British poet and translator A.S. Klein (known as Tony Klein).

March 2012: Dickens Day! Bilkent ELIT Celebrates the Bicentenary of Charles Dickens' Birth
(re-scheduled from February 2012 because of snow)

The bicentenary of Charles Dickens's birth is 2012. Around the world his readers are commemorating his life and work with festivals, conferences, workshops, performances, and radio and TV shows. As part of the wide variety of diverse and rich events that will go on throughout this year to mark the bicentenary, the ELIT Department at Bilkent University celebrated the 200th birthday of Dickens. Dickens Day was organized by Assist. Prof. Dr. Valerie Kennedy and Assist. Prof. Dr. Ayse Çelikkol.

A panel of papers by Assist. Prof. Dr. Valerie Kennedy from Bilkent University, Assist. Prof Dr. Margaret Sonmez from METU, Assist. Prof. Dr. Ayse Çelikkol from Bilkent University, and Assist. Prof. Dr. Alev Karaduman from Hacettepe University elucidated on the topic of Dickens and the Problem of the Family.

A student roundtable discussion followed the panel, focusing on "Dickens's criticism of society and human behavior." Ülkem Önal, Selda Saraç, Alican Erbakan, Ipek Çakaloz, and Melih Mol articulated their views on this topic, with reference to different works from articles and novels written by Dickens and responded to each other's ideas.

A dramatized reading of selected scenes from A Christmas Carol with Assoc. Prof. Dr. Don Randall as Scrooge and ELIT students (Kaan Akin, Mustafa Çaglayan, Alev Sezin Çirak, Beste Haskan, Gülfem Toy, Pinar Esma Polat, Özkan Akkaya, Serap Biyikli, Berat Melih Kalender, Nimet Poyraz, Nazli Yalçin, Gamze Sönmez, Erolcan Talas, Ahmet Can Vargün, and Yasemin Bayramoglu) was also part of the Celebration.
